THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE

Screenplay by DONALD JAMES
Directed by LESLIE NORMAN

"Come on, Archie, your whole life has been spent conning the World. This is probably the greatest challenge of your career."

UK TRANSMISSION DATES:
Thursday 16th December 1971 - GRANADA and ANGLIA - 8pm
Friday 17th December 1971 - ATV Midlands, HTV, LONDON, SOUTHERN and YORKSHIRE - 7.30pm

Danny and Brett grope their way through the espionage jungle with Brett in a tight spot when suspected of being a traitor and murderer.

Patriotism has its penalties, as Brett Sinclair (ROGER MOORE) soon discovers when persuaded by Judge Fulton (LAURENCE NAISMITH) to plunge into the espionage jungle. Somebody in British Intelligence has turned traitor, and as he is inside the department he has been able to keep one step ahead of every trap set for him, the latest of which is when a message for him, arranging a rendezvous at an Italian farmhouse, is intercepted. The message is passed on, but with the date altered. Brett keeps the appointment instead, escorted by Danny Wilde (TONY CURTIS), and meets a man named Gregor (JOHN ORCHARD).

Because of the security, other British agents are unaware, of course, that Brett is an imposter. Two are keeping an eye on Gregor and in a gun battle one is killed. The other, a lovely girl named Kay Hunter (SUZY KENDALL), gets away but suspects Brett of being the traitor and killer, with Danny as his colleague.

On the scene appears Archie Sinclair Beauchamp (TERRY THOMAS), an impecunious relative of Brett's who uses his wits to survive and is accompanied by a man, David Price (STANLEY MEADOWS), who has given him a lift in his car; also on the scene, Gregor's boss, Krilov (STEPHEN GREIF).

Both sides are after Brett. Kay wants him because she thinks he is the traitor; Krilov because of the secrets he believes Brett knows and the necessity of getting him before the British can arrest him. The unfortunate Brett is beset by both sides and eventually finds himself a prisoner of Krilov and Gregor in their Embassy. Danny quickly realises that Brett is in acute danger because his real identity will soon be discovered. He must be rescued!

Brett's predicament is less uncomfortable than he has feared, thanks to his cross-examiner being a glamorous girl called Senka (GERALDINE MOFFATT), so he is not so pleased as he might have been when Danny and Archie audaciously break into the Embassy to succour him, but he allows himself to be helped and then he and Danny go to the farmhouse to await the arrival of the real traitor when he keeps the changed-date rendezvous.

But trapping the traitor leads to even more drama when Kay is kidnapped by Krilov and Gregor. She must be exchanged. And there is only one man available, the startled and scared Archie...
